Keith Hackett believes the referee made the right call when sending off Petar Sucic for a challenge on Ranger star John Souttar in Scotland’s clash with Croatia on Friday.
The Croatian was booked in the 29th minute for a late challenge on Billy Gilmour before getting his marching orders in the 43rd with a challenge on Souttar, described as “reckless” by Hackett.
Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, ex-FIFA referee Hackett agreed with the referee’s call to send Sucic off.
Hackett said: “The player knew exactly what he was doing. It was a good detection by the referee.
“It’s a reckless challenge and therefore there’s no hesitation for me.
“He’s got contact with the ground but his boot is high and it’s a second yellow for sure, no question.”
Petar Sucic sees red for challenge on Rangers defender John Souttar
Thanks to a late goal from Aston Villa star John McGinn, Scotland went on to win the game against the 10 men of Croatia with Souttar playing a huge role at the back.
Despite the man disadvantage, Croatia continued to pile the pressure on Scotland and Souttar had to be at the top of his game to prevent the visitors from taking the lead.
Souttar has been a standout performer for club and country so far this campaign and has been one of the only consistent positives at Ibrox in what has been a dismal season to date.
The Gers find themselves a disturbing nine points behind the league-leading duo of Celtic and Aberdeen, having played the same number of games, albeit with a Scottish Cup final on the Horizon against the former to look forward to.
In other Rangers news, Connor Goldson’s comments about the Gers’ failure to build on their 2021 Scottish Premiership title will leave fans despondent.
