Report: Arsenal have just made contact to sign an 'extraordinary' free agent

Arsenal have enquired about a move for a very high-rated free agent.

The Gunners have made a pretty slow start to the summer transfer window but business is now starting to really kick into gear.

Riccardo Calafiori is close to joining whilst a move for Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino is expected to materialise in the coming days.

Now, it has just emerged, that Arsenal have made an approach to sign a free agent.

Arsenal enquire about Sergi Roberto

According to Spanish outlet Sport, Arsenal have made an approach to sign Sergi Roberto, who departed Barcelona earlier this month upon the expiry of his contract.

The 32-year-old did have an agreement in place with Barca to extend his contract but that collapsed due to the club’s financial woes.

Mikel Arteta is looking to capitalise on the situation and is eager to find out Roberto’s plans ahead of the fast-approaching season.

Roberto is thought to be keen on a move to the Premier League this summer, so there’s not expected to be a stumbling block in any forthcoming negotiations.

Sergi Roberto profile

Roberto, who has been labelled ‘extraordinary’ per The Athletic, is considered one of the greatest talents to ever come out of La Masia and some would consider him a Barcelona legend.

The Spaniard has made 372 appearances for the club, operating in a number of different positions, though, his most preferred roles are central midfield and right-back.

If he were to join Arsenal, he’d likely join to provide competition for Ben White and Takehiro Tomiyasu.

Roberto’s vast experience would certainly lend itself well to the North Londoners’ aspirations, as they look to win the Premier League title.

In other news, Arsenal are insisting on trying to bring ‘incredible’ £86m striker to the Emirates.
