Report: Newcastle now looking to beat Man United in signing 'world class' free agent

Newcastle United endured one of the most underwhelming summer transfer windows of any side in the Premier League.

Eddie Howe‘s disappointment has been clear over the last week as the Newcastle boss saw the window close without any major signings land.

Manchester United enjoyed a more successful transfer window but have not enjoyed the best of starts in the Premier League.

Erik ten Hag‘s side were on the end of a miserable defeat against Liverpool on the weekend which sees them sat in the bottom half on just three points.

However, both sides still have some opportunities available to improve their squad for the remainder of the season.

And there is one player who the two clubs are looking at potentially landing as a free agent as he still searches for his next side.

Newcastle battling Manchester United to sign free agent midfielder

Despite their disappointing summer of transfers, Newcastle have made a bright start to the season with seven points from a possible nine.

But it is apparent there is still a lot of work which should have been done in the window with the Toon squad still lacking real quality in depth.

And there is one player currently on the free agent market which would certainly provide both Newcastle and Manchester United with a boost of quality.

According to Team Talk, Newcastle and the Red Devils are both still in the running to land Adrien Rabiot as a free agent.

The report claims Man United have now held ‘internal evaluations’ over the France international having offloaded Scott McTominay.

And then there is Newcastle who have already been in regular contact with the midfielder over his situation.

Rabiot certainly has his options but is said to be taking his time to make the right decision having already missed the start of the 2024/25 campaign.

Newcastle could add real quality with Adrien Rabiot

Although Newcastle have just seen Sandro Tonali make his long awaited return, their lack of depth in midfield was highlighted last week when Joe Willock went down with another injury.

In Rabiot, Newcastle could land themselves a ‘world class‘ midfielder who has won multiple honours in both France and Italy.

But it is unlikely a player of this quality will be allowed to make the move to Tyneside easily with the Red Devils believed to be in the frame.

With both sides having strong midfield options already available, it will be interesting to see whether either of these two Premier League sides actually appeal to the 29-year-old.
