'Ridiculous' - Lilywhite Rose stunned as Tottenham accept FA charge

John Wenham was left baffled after Tottenham accepted a £20,000 fine from the Football Association.

The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose claims it is “ridiculous” that the North London club have been fined after their 4-1 Premier League win over West Ham at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday (19 October).

As reported by BBC Sport (23 October), Spurs and West Ham were charged by the FA for failing to ensure their players “didn’t behave in an improper and/or provocative and/or violent way” as Mohammed Kudus was sent off during a late melee in the match.

Spurs admitted the charge and accepted the £20,000 fine.

However, Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – doesn’t understand why the club have done this.

“For Tottenham to get a fine was ridiculous,” Wenham said.

“I’d expect Kudus to get a longer ban because he was out of control. However, I’m surprised Spurs have just accepted their fine, paid it and moved on.

“Maybe they’ve done that to be shown some leniency down the line somewhere, I don’t know. However, I found that all very confusing.”

For Spurs, £20,000 is no more than a drop in the ocean. Therefore, the club likely didn’t bat an eyelid when paying the fine. However, it is the principle behind the charge.

Many Spurs supporters probably feel as though their players did little wrong, with Kudus the clear instigator.

As a result, Spurs being charged, just as West Ham were, perhaps feels a bit unjust. However, Ange Postecoglou and the club will be keen to move on.

Therefore, it was likely easier to just pay the fine rather than fight the charge, and as Wenham suggested, it will leave them with a bit of goodwill in the bank with the FA.

In other Tottenham news, one player could leave the club in January after a recent transfer update.
