Pundit predicts if John Gilligan will sack Philippe Clement at Rangers

John Gilligan will not take the decision to sack Philippe Clement as interim Rangers chairman, according to Gordon Dalziel.

The Gers manager has come under pressure after a difficult start to the Premiership season, with some supporters and pundits suggesting his days are already numbered at Ibrox.

While the Europa League win over FCSB will have eased the pressure on the Belgian, Open Goal pundit Dalziel doesn’t believe interim chairman Gilligan will be in any rush to sack Clement while he’s in charge.

Speaking on the Open Goal YouTube channel (24 October, 47:32) he said: “John Gilligan, I know John very well and John Gilligan is one of the nicest guys I’ve ever met.

“But John Gilligan is not going to sit there and take the decision and sack a manager that you’ve just given a new four-year contract to.

“Right now, he’s alright.”

Sacking the Rangers manager would certainly be a big call for an interim chairman to make.

Gilligan is only in temporary charge at Ibrox and it would be a major risk to sack a head coach with no CEO or permanent chairman at the football club.

Of course, if Clement’s position becomes untenable, the temporary chairman will have a big decision to make. For now, at least, it seems as though the board in charge at Ibrox are ready and willing to stand by the Belgian.

The Gers’ win over FCSB showed that there is plenty of quality in this playing squad. They don’t demonstrate it often enough on the pitch, but when they are at their attacking best they can be hard to play against.

Clement needs to find a way of playing that makes the Light Blues difficult to contain week in and week out, not just on the European stage.

If he doesn’t, he will always be under pressure from supporters and pundits alike.
