Calvin Bassey has sent James Tavernier a brand-new message after Rangers’ Europa League win at Ibrox over FCSB.
Philippe Clement’s side got back to winning ways with a comfortable 4-0 win on Thursday (24 October) thanks to a brace from Vaclav Cerny and goals from Tom Lawrence and young forward Hamza Igamane.
While Tavernier has come in for plenty of criticism so far this season, the Gers skipper produced a much-improved performance at Ibrox, and former Light Blues teammate Bassey was quick to react to his display.
Commenting on Tavernier’s Instagram post on Friday (25 October) Bassey wrote: “Skipp dog” followed by a single heart emoji.
What has happened to Rangers captain James Tavernier at Ibrox?
No one in this Rangers side is immune to criticism and a lot of the complaints aimed at Tavernier this season have been well warranted, but the Light Blues skipper was much better on Thursday night.
These sorts of matches suit the Englishman down to the ground. He is given plenty of time on the ball and space to venture forward, without having to worry too much about doing any defending, particularly one-on-one.
On the European stage, against weaker opposition, the Gers skipper still has a lot to offer. However, that doesn’t mean that he should be starting week in and week out as it is clear he isn’t able to contain the Premiership or Europe’s best forwards.
The time has come for Clement to begin resting and rotating the right back depending on the opposition. He cannot expect Tavernier to start and perform to the best of his ability each and every game at this stage of his career.
Bassey left Ibrox two years ago and in that time he has had two different clubs and played 37 Premier League games. When he exited Glasgow, Tavernier was defensively poor and very little has changed since.
