Ally McCoist questions Rangers players after what someone said to him in past

Ally McCoist has questioned the mentality of the Rangers squad after previously brushing off suggestions that past success was due to COVID changes.

Speaking on talkSPORT with Jeff Stelling and Jim White (2 September, 09:22), the Ibrox legend said in the wake of the 3-0 loss at Celtic Park, he’d been reminded of the worrying statement someone had told him.

McCoist admitted the “wonderful” achievement of the invincible season under Steven Gerrard could show that the current squad just can’t handle any pressure.

He said: “Do you know what somebody said to me? I brushed it off at the time, but the more I think about it, that particular season – which was a wonderful achievement – I just wonder at the fact that there were no people at the games, I wonder if that actually really did help Rangers more than I thought.

“I thought to myself that it wouldn’t have made too much of a difference, however, I look at some of the players nowadays – they’re affected by it, they don’t seem to be handling the pressure. Maybe that particular season playing behind closed doors actually suited them, to a certain degree.”

Rangers crumble once again in Old Firm v Celtic

Although the lack of away fans to Old Firm derbies is becoming an increasingly popular concept for pundits and journalists alike, Philippe Clement’s side knew what they were walking into at Celtic Park.

The Parkhead atmosphere for Old Firm games is, as expected on another level, but so too is the atmosphere at Ibrox when Celtic are in town – yet they haven’t wilted under a similar degree of pressure.

Steven Gerrard Rangers
Ally McCoist wondered if Steven Gerrard’s title-winning season at Rangers came under less pressure

Last season saw a packed-out Ibrox host the Old Firm on two occasions – the same as Celtic Park – and yet the Gers took just one point from a possible six, losing 1-0 and drawing 3-3.

Collecting maximum points from these two fixtures would have completely turned the tide in the title race, and thus even with 50,000 fans on their side, the Gers have not been up to the task in recent times.

Playing behind closed doors is hopefully a thing of the past, and although a lack of crowd noise may indeed have helped Gerrard’s side win four points at Parkhead in 2020-21, the Light Blues must learn to handle the pressure as Celtic have at Ibrox.

In other Rangers news, one journalist has slammed James Tavernier after his ‘lack of leadership’ in the defeat at Celtic Park.
