Graeme Souness and Simon Jordan have clashed live on talkSPORT after the former claimed that Rangers were not “mullered” by Celtic on Sunday (1 September).

Philippe Clement’s side came into the match at Celtic Park off the back of a convincing 6-0 win over Ross County but were unable to overcome their Old Firm rivals in a 3-0 defeat.

Despite a positive start to the game, Daizen Maeda opened the scoring before Kyogo Furuhashi doubled the Hoops’ lead before half-time, with Callum McGregor adding a third in the final 15 minutes.

Speaking live via talkSPORT on Monday (2 September, 11:39am), Souness said: “Celtic have the better players and the better strikers, and I think if you’re going to win football games, you have to put the ball in the back of the net. I said this last year – they have better strikers than what we have.

“Forget the result. Celtic had 53 per cent of possession, Rangers had 47 per cent at Parkhead. That’s not bad for an away team. Celtic had 14 shots, Rangers had 13 shots. Celtic had four shots on target, Rangers had four shots on target. Celtic had five shots off-target, and Rangers had five shots off-target.

“Does that sound like a one-sided game to you? There is no doubt that there is a gap but that gap, for me, is that Celtic have better strikers. Those stats do not suggest that Celtic did turn up and mullered Rangers at Parkhead.”

Jordan replied: “Did you watch the Man United v Liverpool game? Man United had eight shots to Liverpool’s 11, both had three shots on target, and United had 53% possession. Watch that game, look at the stats and then again at your argument.”

Rangers mullered by Celtic in Old Firm derby?

While the Gers certainly deserved to get more out of the game than a 3-0 defeat, there is no denying there is an obvious gap between the two sides.

Brenden Rodgers was able to splash the cash during the summer transfer window, while Clement and Nils Koppen were tied to a shoestring budget, searching for cheap alternatives or free agents.

The defeat can also come down to the manager, as well as the investment at Ibrox, with Clement coming under heavy fire for some of his decisions, not just on Sunday 1 September, but since his appointment began turning sour.

Statistics always tell a much fairer story, but all that should matter to those at Ibrox is the 3-0 result and, yet again, failing to beat Celtic when it matters.

The Gers have won just one of the last 12 meetings with Celtic, which Clement needs to change if they are to lift the Scottish Premiership title this season.

In other Rangers news, Graeme Souness has taken a £50 bet live on talkSPORT over the Gers’ final league position.
