'Rodrigo Bentancur's Tottenham ban will be reduced'- Wyness has 'amazing' update

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted he would be “amazed” if Tottenham fail in their appeal to reduce Rodrigo Bentancur’s seven-match ban.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted he feels sorry for Spurs and the 27-year-old after the “ridiculously heavy” punishment.

Bentancur was banned by the Football Association for a racist remark he made on TV about teammate Heung-min Son in June.

Tottenham said in a statement that they “accept the guilty finding”, but “believe the subsequent sanction is severe” and confirmed they have appealed the decision.

Son said he and Bentancur remained “brothers” and “nothing had changed” following the incident, which the Uruguay international quickly apologised for.

Bentancur’s Tottenham ban is ‘ridiculous’, says Wyness

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I’m not surprised they’ve appealed this.

“The FA put draconian punishments in place. They are way beyond any natural punishments, they are ridiculously heavy.

“When you look at the case itself, the normal tariff is six games.

“When you read the comments and what Son has said, it’s obviously a clumsy thing to say for Bentancur.

“The FA have come in with seven games, it’s ridiculous. They should’ve given him an education program, or helped him become a spokesman on these issues.

“I’m sure he would have done that.

“I’d be amazed if it isn’t reduced to six, and it should be even less than that.

“It’s just clumsy wording. I feel sorry for Spurs and I feel sorry for Bentancur.”
