Scottish Rugby sources share new Murrayfield & Rangers update as stadium talks underway - report

Scottish Rugby Union sources have shared that Rangers have started talks over a temporary move to Murrayfield, according to the Scottish Sun [20 June].

The switch, to Scotland’s home of rugby, whilst only temporary, could last for the entirety of August as delays to work on the Copland Road Stand at Ibrox take effect.

Murrayfield is high on the list of temporary homes and could host Scottish Premiership and Champions League games early in the season.

Why will Rangers not be able to play at Ibrox for their opening matches?

Following reports from earlier today, Rangers are expected to be forced to play the start of their season away from home.

Work started on the stadium upon the commencement of the 2023/24 season and was due to be finished before the 2024/25 term, however, this no longer seems to be the case.

Although a summer of carnage was on the cards for Rangers with both Philippe Clement and Nils Koppen making many changes to the squad this summer, a change of stadium was likely not on the cards.

Contact has already been made with UEFA by Rangers [Andy Newport, 20 June] regarding changing the venue following the recent news.

Although the Gers not being able to play games at Ibrox isn’t the end of the world, it feels wrong that fans must suffer and now have to make a trip to Edinburgh to see them play a ‘home’ game.

Despite the venue change, Clement will still demand the most from his team and will no doubt expect them to perform to the best of their abilities.

But, Ibrox is Rangers’ home for a reason and comes with its reputation so, it comes as no surprise that the Project Manager who was initially in charge of the development has now been let go by the club.

Without the guaranteed boost from the fans at Ibrox, this change of stadium could prove more problematic than some may think.

In other Rangers news, Connor Barron is set to undergo his medical with the Gers imminently.
