Philippe Clement doesn’t rate Alex Lowry and the attacker will likely be gone from Rangers by the transfer deadline, says Chris Jack.
The Rangers Review journalist said on the outlet’s 16 August Morning Briefing that despite the “real quality” shown by the homegrown talent with his wonder-goal for the B Team in midweek the manager is clearly not convinced, with fellow academy product Leon King expected to follow him out.
Clement has already dropped two senior number 10s from the senior squad with Todd Cantwell having asked to leave and the club seemingly trying to avoid triggering a pay rise in Ianis Hagi’s contract [Daily Record, 13 August].
Jack said (22m 30s): “Because he’s not been given a chance by now it shows that the manager clearly doesn’t rate him. Whether that’s a quality issue, whether that’s what he does on the ball, off the ball, his attitude, something else, he clearly doesn’t fancy Alex Lowry as the answer. And it’s a shame”.
Summing up Lowry and King’s situation he added: “I’d also be surprised if they were both still here come the first week in September”.
Despite Tom Lawrence flattering to deceive Lowry has been told by the Belgian he won’t get games and clubs are already making calls to sign him [Football Scotland, 6 August].
Alex Lowry and Leon King set for Rangers exits
Arguably King and Lowry remain in the conversation due to a lack of quality in the first team as much as their own indisputable claims.
But Lowry’s match-winning double against Clyde in midweek, including a “simply ridiculous” strike into the top corner [4 Lads Had A Dream, 15 August], has come at a time when Clement is crying out for help in the first team.
Lawrence and Scott Wright have both started multiple games already, while Ross McCausland and Rabbi Matondo haven’t had much more of an impact.
Lowry is unlikely to lift the side alone but it is somewhat surprising he isn’t even getting a look in when others are underwhelming.
If the Light Blues were able to sell Hagi and Cantwell to clear the way for a key signing or two it might fade into the background that the likes of Lowry and King probably need to move on for their own development.
But the transfer window has hinged on ifs, buts, and maybes all summer and it looks to be heading towards the deadline in the same vein.
If bids don’t come in for any of the players who are surplus to requirements then value judgments on who should stay or leave will go out the window and Clement will be forced to make the best of what he’s got.
In other Rangers news, a multimillion pound transfer agreement has been reached after the Light Blues made an approach for an in-demand ace this year.
