Chris Sutton has warned Philippe Clement that things could “unravel quickly” for him at Rangers as “dangerous times” loom in Glasgow.
The Light Blues have had a disappointing start to the season having dropped points away to Hearts before failing to qualify for the Champions League again after being well beaten by Dynamo Kyiv at Hampden Park.
While the new campaign is only a matter of weeks old, there is already a feeling of frustration around the Gers’ support and Daily Record pundit Sutton believes the Belgian may already be on borrowed time.
Writing for the Daily Record on Saturday (17 August) he said: “Celtic fans are taking great delight in the mess over at Ibrox, with the Champions League exit to Dynamo Kyiv and all the other issues, while they are splashing the cash to bring back Adam Idah and boasting about how much money they have in the bank.
“I do think these are dangerous times for Rangers and it could unravel quickly for Philippe Clement. But that doesn’t mean Celtic can afford to write off their rivals, or even just underestimate them.”
Will Philippe Clement exit Rangers amid Ibrox and Hampden uncertainty?
Over the last couple of years, Rangers have been incredibly quick to chop and change managers and while they insist that won’t be the case with Clement, Sutton’s assessment of the current situation is right.
Ultimately, the supporters can vote with their feet and their decisions alone can be enough to get a manager sacked. If fans stop attending games, it won’t be too long before Clement is given the axe.
A lot of the frustration from supporters at this moment in time is primarily because of off-the-field issues at Ibrox, but the poor performances on the pitch and failure to qualify for the Champions League are also playing their part.
Something needs to shift sooner rather than later for fans to completely buy into Clement’s approach. So far, the Belgian has failed to show a clear style of play and some of his tactical decisions within games have been baffling.
Hopefully, he will manage to turn it around before it unravels as Sutton suggested.
