'Shame' - Ex-Gers hero reacts as club seal coup signing off Rangers, blames players

Sam Lammers failed at Rangers because he did not have the support of his teammates during the time he spent at the club, says Michael Mols.

The former Dutch striker reacted to the news that the 27-year-old was heading back to the Eredivisie as he completed his now-confirmed Ibrox exit to FC Twente, saying it was a “shame” Lammers could not enjoy the same success in Glasgow as he had.

Mols, who won six trophies as a Light Blues player and scored 45 goals, believes the latest move is a great one for Dutch football and the Michael Beale signing is far better suited to the Eredivisie after a highly-successful loan with FC Utrecht.

He said, via ESPN (26 July): “I think it is a shame that he did not succeed at Rangers. In my time I had players around me who supported me, he did not have that. So it was a lot harder for him.”

Asked if the Gers are giving up on the forward to soon he said: “No, Scottish football is simply not for him. He is much better suited to the Netherlands, as we have seen again at Utrecht. And Twente is a step up.”

And on whether the signing was a gamble: “For Dutch football it is absolutely a certainty. The move to Twente is very good for him, now it is up to him whether it will be a success or not.”

Michael Mols reacts to Sam Lammers Rangers exit

Mols is probably better placed than most to comment on the situation as a Dutch striker who scored goals for Twente, Utrecht and Rangers.

Lammers unfortunately did far too little of the latter after finding the net only twice in 31 appearances so an exit was inevitable.

But 11 goals in just 20 games back in the Netherlands on loan clearly suggests the league is where he is best suited as he hadn’t come close to that level of scoring since he was last playing there with Heerenveen in 2019.

Michael Stewart had previously claimed that Lammers was being ignored by his teammates during games as he indicated Nico Raskin and John Lundstram had turned down opportunities to pass to him during a 2-1 win over Hearts [BBC Sportsound, 29 October, 4.05pm] because they knew he wouldn’t do anything with it.

Sam Lammers scored twice for Rangers and never looked comfortable.

The right outcome looks to have finally been reached to send Lammers back to where he is best and bank at least some sort of financial return for a signing which never worked out.

That hadn’t looked possible when his salary was pricing him out of a move [AD Voetbal podcast, 15 July], and his fee may even end up representing an unexpected profit on the deal that brought him from Atalanta for £3.5million a year ago [Scottish Sun, 26 July] so everyone involved can put the experience behind them and move forward.

In other Rangers news, the terms have emerged as the Light Blues close in on selling another player.
