Shearer blasts ‘terrible’ Udogie as MOTD footage emerges of Tottenham defender v West Ham

Alan Shearer believes Destiny Udogie’s defending before West Ham United’s only goal against Tottenham on Saturday was “terrible.”

The left-back not only failed to clear his lines but he also couldn’t match Aaron Wan-Bissaka in the air after Mohammed Kudus’ cross came into the box

This resulted in Wan-Bissaka passing the ball onto Jarrod Bowen who then turned the Italy international inside-out and hit a cross towards Kudus who calmly placed the ball in the back of the net.

Spurs won the game at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium 4-1 and moved up to seventh in the Premier League table.

Speaking live on Match of the Day (19 October, 39:00), Shearer shared his thoughts on Udogie’s defensive work.

“If this is a good ball in [from Mohammed Kudus] then look at [Tomas] Soucek in the middle, there’s actually no one within five or six yards of him,” Shearer said live on Match of the Day (19 October, 39:00).

“It doesn’t happen on this occasion but West Ham keep the ball alive and eventually that’s where the goal comes from.

“It’s terrible defending from Udogie, Bowen goes past him too easily and Kudus is in there again and scuffs it in there.”

Tottenham need to build upon this Premier League win

Tottenham have been a bit of a curious case this term, although they find themselves competing for the European places, it feels like more could come from Postecoglou’s men.

They’ve triumphed over Manchester United and Brentford this season but have lost against bigger teams such as Arsenal.

Udogie has been in decent form for Spurs this term but there has been the odd occasion when the Italian hasn’t lived up to expectations, much like in Saturday’s game against West Ham.

It’s still early in the season of course and there’s plenty of time for things to change, but, if Tottenham want to have a decent go at Champions League football, they need to step things up a gear.

Their next Premier League game is an away clash against Crystal Palace on 27 October and should be a game in which Spurs can easily outclass their opponents.

If the game goes as expected and other results go their way, Postecoglou’s men could be as high as fifth before the end of next weekend which would be a decent achievement at this stage of the season.
