Rangers should have sold Rabbi Matondo by now as he doesn’t justify his high wages at Ibrox, says Derek Ferguson.
The Welsh international is currently out with a long-term injury, having been hurt immediately after the transfer window closed [Football Scotland, 5 September].
There had been mounting interest in signing him ahead of the deadline and a loan offer from Norwich was turned down [Football Scotland, 29 August] but the Light Blues seemingly decided to hold onto him after he starred in the 6-0 win over Ross County on 24 August.
Philippe Clement told Sky Sports after that game, in which the 24-year-old scored twice, that he expected the winger would stay unless a club came in to pay a lot of money.
But Ferguson believes the Gers have overvalued Matondo for too long and with him thought to be on one of the biggest contracts in the squad he should have already been moved on.
Leeds United [Football Scotland, 15 August] and Blackburn Rovers [Scottish Sun, 23 August] were both linked in the summer but given the current lay-off it would be a surprise if there was the same interest in January.
The former Schalke wide man has made 68 appearances since arriving three summers ago but only has eight goals and 12 assists as he has never been a regular starter and has been interrupted by injury issues, so Ferguson feels the Ross County game and the dramatic stoppage-time equaliser against Celtic last season (7 April) haven’t justified keeping him.
Rangers shunned Norwich amid Leeds, Blackburn links
Ferguson spoke exclusively to Ibrox News and said: “Ah! Matondo, he’s one of the highest paid players. He gave one of his best performances against a team that’d been beat by one of the lower-league teams, thats Spartans beating Ross County, then he had a good game against them at Hampden.
“That, plus the other moment that he’s given us was the goal against Celtic.
“No, Matondo should have been out the door.“
