Everton could be losing Dominic Calvert-Lewin this summer with the club currently in talks with Newcastle over a potential transfer, according to Sky Sports’ Mark McAdam.

Speaking on Sky Sports News on 22 June, McAdam said: “Newcastle and Everton are in dialogue with regards to 27-year-old striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

“He has just one year left on his current Everton contract and whilst he’s been injured a little bit over the last few years, there is no question that he still has a lot of ability when he is fit and ready to rock and roll.

“He’s someone that gets in the box, someone that can run the channels, someone that has a physical presence, and he’s still at a good age as well.”

However, despite talks taking place, getting the deal over the line could prove to be difficult.

McAdam stressed that there could potentially be a large fee involved and Calvert-Lewin would also need to agree personal terms, even if both clubs agree on a financial package.

Can Everton afford to lose Calvert-Lewin?

The Toffees face an important decision regarding Calvert-Lewin’s future. Though troubled by injuries, Calvert-Lewin has been instrumental with his goals. Since joining the Toffees back in 2016, he has scored 68 goals in 247 appearances across all competitions. He offers a lot in the box including the ability to win headers and intimidate defenders.

On the other hand, Everton cannot turn a blind eye to the injury record of the striker. He has had recurring fitness problems and often had to sit out crucial games because of injury, hence proving that the Toffees can perform without him.

A potential transfer fee for Calvert-Lewin could also provide the financial means to strengthen other areas of Everton’s squad, but replacing his goal-scoring and physical presence could prove a difficult task. As such, Everton need to weigh these factors against their ambitions for the forthcoming season and the prospect of getting an ideal replacement who could provide goals.

The Toffees have already done some business this summer, having announced their first signing of the transfer window on Saturday, with midfielder Tim Iroegbunam arriving on a three-year deal from Aston Villa.

The 20-year-old, who has cost a reported £9m, was a European U19 Championship winner with England in 2022 and has also represented the U20s.

Everton have also been linked with winger Yankuba Minteh who spent a successful season with Arne Slot’s Feyenoord last year but the question remains whether either of them could step up and produce as many goals as Calvert-Lewin, especially since Minteh is on the transfer list of some top European clubs.

In other Everton news, the Toffees have now issued contact with their Premier League rivals to sign a midfielder who recently won the Champions League.
