Ange Postecoglou could get his marching orders at Tottenham courtesy of Rangers in an incredible twist, according to Scott McDermott.
McDermott’s article for the Daily Record [7 December] put to the table the “parallel universe” of Philippe Clement overcoming a recent adversary of the Gers to cost the Australian his job down south, before holding the Scottish League Cup aloft three days later.
Clement’s men take on Ross County in a Premiership clash on Sunday [8 December] before a high-profile Europa League meeting with Postecoglou’s Spurs [12 December], before then facing Celtic in the League Cup final.
“Imagine it… former Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou returns to Glasgow – the city where he tormented Rangers for two years,” McDermott spelled out.
“And he’s serenaded with choruses of: ‘You’re getting sacked in the morning’. Spurs lose at Ibrox in the Europa League and Postecoglou gets his jotters in the morning. And a few days later, Philippe Clement is standing at the top of the Hampden stairs holding aloft the League Cup. He’s doing The Bouncy with supporters behind the goal again – only this time he’s actually got something to celebrate.
“Meanwhile, Celtic gaffer Brendan Rodgers is left licking his wounds after a shock League Cup final loss. Sounds crazy eh? Unbelievable even. Like a Scottish football parallel universe.”
Rangers can turn season around before Christmas
The “parallel universe” may not appear too realistic to some Rangers fans, while others let themselves get swept up in excitement of which they would argue they have been deprived.
The potential of the coming days reminds the Ibrox fanbase that the fate of what has so far appeared a disastrous campaign can turn on a knife-edge.
Rangers will not win the league. The investment numbers we are talking are dwarfed by Celtic, who also haven’t had to endure the utter boardroom chaos which has defined the early part of the campaign so far. They haven’t been set back years by former managers, nor directors.
However, the club are showing signs that they are onboard with the next best thing. An encouraging European campaign so far could elevate to a new realm with victory over Tottenham, which given Postecoglou’s body language of late is perfectly plausible.
Then come Rodgers’ bitter rivals at Hampden in an all-or-nothing clash. It’s a chance to retain the silver lining on last season’s disappointment. After that comes an integral January transfer window for the squad rebuild at Ibrox to be ironed out.
Play it right, and there remains plenty to look forward to.
