View: Ange could give 100% Tottenham outsider new chance after what he did v Hearts

Emerson Royal may have done enough to convince Ange Postecoglou to hand him more chances in the Tottenham starting XI.

The Brazilian full-back was involved as a second-half substitute as Spurs beat Hearts 5-1 in a pre-season friendly at Tynecastle Park on Wednesday 17 July.

While Emerson has experienced a mixed time at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, being linked with an exit in each recent transfer window, he became more important towards the end of last season.

Postecoglou was left with few centre-back options last term when Cristian Romero was awarded a red card and Mickey van de Ven was sidelined through injury, which saw Emerson start in the middle of defence.

Though the 25-year-old was only involved as a right-back against Hearts on this occasion, his performance will have done his future chances of first-team minutes no harm.

Despite only making 11 Premier League appearances last term, Emerson looked sharp during the pre-season game in Scotland.

During his 45 minutes on the pitch, he completed 92 per cent of his passes, 75 per cent of his long balls, and won 50 per cent of his tackles and 100 per cent of his ground duels [FotMob].

Pedro Porro is definitely going to be the first-choice right-back next season, but with the amount of extra football from Europa League qualification, it will be important to have options in all positions.

Though he only has four Tottenham goals to his name in 101 matches, Emerson ranks in the top 80 percentile for full-backs among those in Europe’s top five leagues, proving his attacking threat as well as defensive capabilities [FBref].

He is also not shy of putting his body on the line, ranking in the top 89 percentile for tackles won, the top 91 percentile for blocks and the top 98 percentile for clearances.

If Postecoglou wants proof that Emerson is Spurs through and through, he only needs to look at the player’s underlying statistics from last season to see this.
