Ange Postecoglou would be in the conversation to be the next England manager but would not pose a “serious issue” to Tottenham, Paul Robinson has said.
According to The Telegraph [17 July], The FA’s technical director John McDermott has been a long-time admirer of the Australian, with the Spurs boss expected to be top of his shortlist.
This comes after Gareth Southgate’s decision to step down as manager of the Three Lions following their 2-1 defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final, though Robinson is not concerned by the links.
Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, he said: “Ange has done a fantastic job, and nobody at Tottenham will want to see him go. But when you’re achieving and playing his style of football, being successful as a manager, there’s always going to be potential suitors.
“It’s the same with players. If they’re at a club that isn’t in the Champions League or isn’t competing at the top of the league, there’s going to be an issue. I don’t think there’s any real serious issue of Ange going to manage England.
“The FA have got a DNA and they’ll be in the process of finding someone. Lee Carsely looks like the next cab off the rank, Southgate has set England up through all the youth levels – the coaches and progression.
“I’m of the strong opinion that the England manager should be English. But on the other side, if the English managers are not good enough, they may have to look elsewhere. Postecoglou would come into the conversation.”
Ange Postecoglou linked with Tottenham exit as England target next manager
Postecoglou has done a fine job with Spurs so far, arriving last summer and already leading the club to Europa League qualification, narrowly missing out on Champions League football to Aston Villa.
The Australian will still feel he has plenty of work to achieve at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and has already addressed the rumours following Spurs’ pre-season victory over Hearts on Wednesday 17 July.
Speaking in his post-match press conference, quoted by Football London [17 July], he said: “I was having a nap this afternoon. I have no idea. I’m the Tottenham manager and I’m determined to bring success to this club. That’s where my focus is totally.”
Instead of worrying about the England job, Postecoglou is preparing his side for the 2024/25 campaign, with Premier League and Europa League success to challenge for.
In other Tottenham news, Spurs could sign Lille star Jonathan David as an Ivan Toney transfer alternative.
