Southampton make Russell Martin decision for Tottenham clash - O'Rourke

Southampton boss Russell Martin will be in charge for the visit of Tottenham on Sunday (15 December), sources have told Football Insider.

It is believed Saints chiefs have major reservations over making a managerial change despite Martin’s increasing unpopularity with the club’s fanbase.

Football Insider revealed on Monday (9 December) that the Southampton hierarchy feel there is “no rush” to make a decision on the future of the Scot.

That is despite woeful early-season form which sees them sit bottom of the Premier League on just five points.

Martin was handed a new contract in the off-season after leading Southampton to promotion via the play-offs.

But the Saints are already effectively nine points from safety at the foot of the table as the busy festive schedule gets underway.

The 38-year-old boss is set to stick to his guns despite criticism of his possession-heavy system, which has spawned a series of mistakes leading directly to opposition goals this term.

Martin will be in charge when Tottenham come to St Mary’s Stadium, with a League Cup quarter-final tie against Liverpool following just days later (18 December) on the south coast.

He was appointed last summer (2023) with Southampton paying Swansea compensation to release him from his role in south Wales.

The ex-defender won 28 of 49 Championship games last term but has managed just one win in 15 since the Saints’ return to the top flight.

Martin’s deal at St Mary’s Stadium runs until June 2027.
