Ianis Hagi has shared a photo of himself back in Rangers first-team training after returning to the senior fold at Ibrox, posting his own reaction to the development.
The Romanian international posted on his Instagram stories on 1 October after it emerged an end to the stand-off between him and the club had been reached, sharing the image from the club’s official account.
The Rangers Review broke the news that the two sides had come to an agreement to bring him back up from the B Team.
Along with a blue heart Hagi posted the simple caption “Back!”.
Philippe Clement has Ianis Hagi in Rangers squad
The 41-cap international impressed for his country at Euro 2024 but was restricted to doing so for the reserves upon his return to Glasgow, in what was just one of a many reasons for fans to be frustrated this summer.
It is taken far longer than it should have, a full month past the end of the transfer window, for the situation to be resolved but Hagi’s return to the first-team picture looks a major positive.
At worst this should help generate a market for his eventual exit if whatever agreement has been reached on the contract clause at the centre of the issue is only temporary, and at best should provide Philippe Clement with a useful asset.
Sky Sports reported on 12 August that the 25-year-old had a wage increase trigger in his deal which was seeing him frozen out of the first team picture despite wanting to stay, with the Daily Record reporting the following day it was worth an extra £6,000-a-week.
That alone seems worth the investment if he can bring something to the team, not least compared to paying him as a reserve.
There has been additional speculation that former side Genk might be due another payment if he made his 100th appearance, but whether the recent breakthrough also involves the Belgian side remains to be seen.
Rangers overpaying players has been an issue in recent years but with all transfer windows now long-closed and Hagi arguably having a stronger CV than most of his teammates at Ibrox in attacking areas it is far better for him to be collecting a salary while contributing to Clement’s side than not.
The player has seemingly made clear he wanted to earn his wage and indicated the sort of commitment manager’s are often desperate for, and now he finally looks set to get the chance to prove it.
