Chris Jack has suggested Robbie Fraser’s Rangers career is “ebbing away” from him after recent developments at Ibrox.
The 21-year-old defender has only made one Premiership appearance this season having fallen behind Jefte, Ridvan Yilmaz and Neraysho Kasanwirjo in Philippe Clement’s pecking order.
Although Fraser only signed a “strange” new contract with the Gers in the summer, Rangers Review journalist Jack feels that it is becoming more likely the left-back will depart Glasgow.
Speaking on The Rangers Review YouTube channel (1 October, 14:00) he said: “I think it’s looking more and more likely that Robbie’s long-term future does not lie at Ibrox.
“If you sign that contract and you know you’re going to be the third choice when the first two choices are not available and you still don’t get the chance, I think that speaks volumes.
“For me, it was strange that he got that contract in the summer because you knew that Ridvan [Yilmaz] was going to play his share of games, he clearly had faith in Jefte having pursued him for so long and spent the money to get him in.
“Where was Robbie Fraser going to get in? He was not going to get the number of games he required to take his game on.
“I think it would be best if he were to move on, ideally to a Premiership team. Go and play as many minutes as you can in the second half of the season and try and prove yourself at that level.
“If you really, really impress, you then maybe get a crack at Rangers next season. Even then, I think it’s probably a tall order for him.
“Someone mentioned Leon King, the same thing for him. You just feel their Rangers careers are ebbing away from them.”
Is Robby Fraser still a Rangers player at Ibrox?
As Jack suggests, it was slightly strange to see Fraser put pen to paper on a new deal at Ibrox this summer when it seemed so obvious that he was nowhere near the top of Clement’s plans currently.
The 21-year-old is actually younger than Jefte but has played less first-team football than the Brazilian and that seems incredibly unlikely to change while he is still a Rangers player under Clement.
Perhaps a loan move away from Ibrox would provide him with the platform to show the Gers boss that he deserves a chance to impress in Glasgow. If not, it will help put the defender in the shop window ahead of next summer’s transfer window.
Whatever happens, it feels incredibly unlikely at this moment in time that Fraser will play the bulk of his career in Gers colours. It may well be best for all parties if a move can be agreed in January that allows him to play regular football.
