Aston Villa and Newcastle United could ask questions of the Premier League about Manchester United’s exceptional allowances.

That is the view of former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the Premier League duo are likely to take any opportunity they can to ask why some teams were allowed certain allowances after they were forced to make last-ditch sales to avoid a potential profit and sustainability (PSR) breach last season.

Borson revealed United were given an exceptional £40million Covid allowance in 2021/2022, while most other top-flight clubs are believed to have claimed around £1million.

The Manchester giants also spent £30.3million in exceptional costs related to Sir Jim Ratcliffe buying his 27.7-per-cent stake at Old Trafford in February this year.

Football Insider revealed on 11 July Erik ten Hag’s side would have failed PSR last season if they weren’t permitted to add back those exceptional costs.

Villa and Newcastle were just two of several clubs to have made late sales before the 30 June accounting deadline to help them avoid a PSR breach and potential points deduction.

Aston Villa and Newcastle bruised by last-ditch sales

Borson revealed the pair could ask questions of the Premier League if they discover certain allowances may have also been available to them.

He told Football Insider: “You would think that teams that had to scramble around on 29 and 30 June, the Villa’s and Newcastle’s, will take any opportunity they have to question some of the allowances given to other teams.

“I think they will feel quite bruised by what happened at the end of the window. I think it was touch and go, certainly for Newcastle.

“If you watch the interview with the CEO Darren Eales, it’s clear it was touch and go and it was a stressful time for those clubs.

“If they then discover other allowances may have been available to them, but just largely because they didn’t claim them or were rejected by the Premier League while other teams’ claims were accepted, then there is going to be questions.

“But we have limited information other than the audited accounts, which clearly are reliable sources of data.

“But we never have the completely full picture, so everything has to be looked at with that kind of disclaimer.”
