Stefan Borson drops crushing Wolves points deduction verdict

Wolves are likely to have just scraped through the Premier League’s profit and sustainability (PSR) test despite their financial struggles last season.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the West Midlands club likely got their necessary profits in place in January due to their end-of-May accounting deadline.

The Premier League side were believed to be close to breaching the PSR rules in 2023/24 despite selling several players to help balance the books last summer.

Wolves announced a net loss of £67.2million in their latest 2022-23 accounts after reporting losses of £46.1million in 2021-22, with top-flight sides only permitted to record £105million of losses over a rolling three-year period.

Club chairman Jeff Shi previously penned an open letter to fans explaining they were closely monitoring their losses in a bid to help them comply with the Premier League’s financial rules.

Wolves set to avoid points deduction despite PSR concerns

Borson believes Gary O’Neil’s side likely just made it through PSR despite facing various financial issues over the past year.

He told Football Insider: “I think they were pretty close to a PSR breach in 2023-24.

“They probably just scraped through.

“The interesting thing about Wolves from a PSR perspective is they still have an end-of-May year-end.

“That means once you get through the January transfer window, unless they move the year-end to June, they are stuck because nobody is selling players before the end of May.

“Their situation with PSR is usually concluded from a transfer perspective when the transfer window closes in January.

“We have to assume that they got their necessary profits in place by then and, therefore, passed the PSR test for 2023-24.”
