Stefan Borson drops 'Huge' verdict on Tottenham star landing lengthy ban

Tottenham star Rodrigo Bentancur is unlikely to receive a lengthy ban provided there was no intent to offend in his comments towards teammate Heung-min Son.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the Uruguay international will probably still receive some form of suspension.

Bentancur, 27, was charged by the FA on 12 September for using a racial slur aimed towards Son on Uruguayan TV in June.

The governing body’s laws say “match-based sanctions of 6-12 games will be recommended to regulatory commissions for almost all acts of discrimination by individual participants”.

Manchester City star Bernardo Silva was handed a one-game ban and fined £50,000 in 2019 following a controversial tweet about his former teammate Benjamin Mendy.

Tottenham star Rodrigo Bentancur could avoid ‘huge’ ban

Borson suggested Bentancur could avoid a “huge” ban if the racial slur is taken as a comment lost in translation as opposed to meaning to cause offence to Son.

He told Football Insider: “It feels a bit more like Bernardo Silva’s case at Man City, where he made some comments about Benjamin Mendy, who was a friend of his.

“He got a one-game ban for that, but he effectively said there was no intent to offend.

“I assume that’s Bentancur’s position as well.

“He will probably get something I would think, but probably not six to 12 games because I don’t think there is any aggravating factor.

“As I understand it, he didn’t do it to be offensive.

“But clearly, if there is an offensive element to it as an aggravating factor, then he can expect a very significant ban.

“But being generous to him, assuming that it was a sort of lost in translation comment about a friend, then he may still get a ban, but it won’t be huge.

“But if you remember, Bernardo I think was outraged about his ban because Mendy was one of his best friends.”
