Manchester City will now be able to submit another application for their deal with Etihad Airways to be approved following the ruling in their associated party transactions (APT) case.
That is the view of former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the Premier League previously rejected the sponsorship deal because of the growth rate that was added for future years.
Man City took legal action against the Premier League regarding the APT rules currently in place at an arbitration hearing in June.
Both sides have claimed a victory in the case after the arbitration panel’s decision was published on 7 October, where two aspects of the rules were deemed to be unlawful.
A significant part of the case was Pep Guardiola’s side striking a lucrative extension to their deal with Etihad, which is owned by the Abu Dhabi government through the wealth fund ADQ.
Man City deal with Etihad to receive Premier League approval
Borson revealed Man City will now be hoping their deal with Etihad gets the necessary approval after it was previously rejected by the Premier League.
He told Football Insider: “The second win for City was the putting aside of the decision to reject City’s very valuable and complex sponsorship transaction with Etihad.
“Etihad are seeking to renew the long-term deal they have with City.
“The Premier League in April rejected it in its full terms.
“It’s interesting and important to note they would have accepted Etihad’s sponsorship, just not at the very highest level.
“They wanted to trim the size of the Etihad transaction and that was largely because of the growth rate that was put on it in terms of future years.
“City have successfully got that decision unwound and will now have another round of being able to make submissions that they would hope will get the approval they have been seeking.”
In other news, “enormous” offers expected for Kevin De Bruyne and Mohamed Salah.
