'Headscratcher' - Keith Jackson baffled by 'strange' Rangers transfer situation

Daily Record journalist Keith Jackson finds Rangers current transfer business a bit of a “headscratcher”.

This comes after the vast majority of the talent added to the Gers’ ranks has been players for the future such as Hamza Igamane [Daily Record, 7 July].

And, while speaking on Daily Record Hotline (5 August) Jackson shared his worries for the Gers’ Scottish Premiership title race.

“There are two separate strategies going on in this transfer window for Rangers,” said Jackson.

“One is to freshen the squad up with younger blood who could be developed into potential major assets in the years ahead.

“And that’s fine, but at a time when you need experienced guys for your first team, it is a bit of a headscratcher.

“They’re so in demand for first-team-ready players and it’s a very very very strange situation.”

Rangers need to add more experience to their ranks

As Jackson said, a lot of Philippe Clement’s recruitment throughout the transfer window has been with the future in mind.

Granted, players such as Connor Barron and Jefte are both young but thanks to the talent they possess, they seem to be first-team ready.

However, in Igamane’s case, for example, the Morocco international isn’t yet ready to lead the Glasgow-based outfit’s line.

And whilst building for the future is all well and good, if there isn’t a short-term plan in place whilst players develop, it could all go to waste.

Connor Barron
Connor Barron is Rangers’ newest midfield signing this summer, on a free transfer from Aberdeen

Robin Propper is the most recent player added to the club’s ranks and whilst he’s one of the team’s oldest additions this summer, his addition was to fill the void that was left by stalwart Connor Goldson.

Rangers’ experience mostly comes from their defensive line and the fact that there is little to no experience scattered around the rest of the team doesn’t bode well for the club at this time.

If any further additions are made, they have to have at least some sort of experience in order to help guide the youngsters now at the club.
