Stefan Borson: Man United could lose out on '£80m' in crushing new blow

Manchester United could miss out on up to £80million in prize money if they fail to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

That is the view of former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider several revenue streams, including the money Man United receive from Adidas, will fall if they miss out on a place in European football’s premier club competition again.

United agreed a 10-year extension with Adidas last year in a deal believed to be worth up to £900million.

But The Times reported on 1 October the new agreement includes a clause stating the German kit manufacturer will pay the Manchester giants £10million less per year if they are not in the Champions League from next season onwards.

Erik ten Hag’s side have endured a difficult start to the new season as they currently sit 14th in the Premier League table.

They have also drawn both of their opening Europa League games after an injury-time equaliser from Harry Maguire salvaged a point in Porto last week.

Man United prize money might not have paid for Porto hotel

But Borson revealed the prize money from that draw would barely have paid for United’s hotel in the Portuguese city.

He told Football Insider: “The bigger loss from not being in the Champions League is not the Adidas £10million, it’s the circa £75-80million difference in prize money and opportunity.

“United drew with Porto. That’s worth £125,000 in terms of prize money for that draw.

“That barely would pay for the hotel for the squad, maybe not even that.

“That’s the bigger issue for United in terms of not having Champions League, it’s not just the Adidas deal.

“Clearly, the £10million is important.

“But there are a lot of variables in the profit and loss and, if you don’t hit Champions League, there are a lot of revenue streams that will fall and a lot of those revenue streams fall straight to the bottom line, such as the prize money.

“It’s a big issue not qualifying for the Champions League.”
