Stevie Clifford: Rivals fans to be upset by next Rangers signing as potential fee detailed

Rangers Review’s Stevie Clifford has touted Connor Barron as a potential replacement for Ryan Jack at Ibrox.

Speaking on the platform’s live stream [14 June], Clifford and Derek Clark discussed the progress of the Light Blues’ pursuit of Barron and what the Aberdeen midfielder could bring to Philippe Clement’s side.

The 21-year-old is available as a free agent this summer and is attracting interest from a host of Championship clubs, alongside several teams in Serie A including Champions League-bound Bologna – he is set to make a final decision on his future next week.

Clifford said: “Connor Barron’s a player that I really like.

“He’d cost about £200-300k on a development fee [compensation], you’re taking him from Aberdeen which will upset them and that’s always a plus… and he’s a very good player.

“You’re basically swapping him for Ryan Jack – somebody 10 years [Jack’s] junior, and not with the chronic injury issues Jacko had.”

Rangers competing for Barron with transfer rivals

Barron’s breakthrough season with 29 matches at the heart of Aberdeen’s midfield in 2023-24 has garnered the admiration of many clubs elsewhere.

The expiry of the youngster’s contract at Pittodrie provides an added bonus, and is likely to secure Barron a nice windfall at his new club.

Nominated for the SFWA Young Player of the Year award in the recent campaign, Barron is certainly one for the future and has been labelled as a “no-brainer” by many Rangers supporters.

Rangers are facing stern competition for Connor Barron

The trouble for the Gers is the competition they are facing for his signature, and it’s understandable that the player’s camp want a few more days to mull over a huge decision.

Clark mentioned on Friday morning’s stream that Championship clubs including Stoke, Swansea and Cardiff were interested in acquiring the midfielder, along with Bologna and Hellas Verona in Italy after other Serie A clubs ended their interest.

Clement would be over the moon should Barron elect to stay in Scotland and begin a new chapter at Ibrox.

In other Rangers news, the clubs who allegedly rivalled the Gers for Nsiala have been revealed.
