Paul Robinson has applauded Daniel Levy for a “very clever” piece of business after Tottenham reached an agreement with Real Betis for Johnny Cardoso.
Spurs have agreed a priority option with Betis to sign the 22-year-old midfielder, according to Tom Bogert, with a fixed fee of £25.3million if the North London club decide to trigger the deal.
However, Fabrizio Romano revealed [30 August] that should Ange Postecoglou’s side decide against taking the player, Spurs will pocket a percentage of any fee received for the American in the future.
Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Robinson said: “It’s certainly not a deal that we’ve often seen structured. He’s clearly a player that Tottenham like but don’t feel he would be integrated into the squad or the starting XI at this stage in his career.
“Or, Real Betis weren’t willing to let him go as the deal was done very late in the window. It’s a strange one, that’s for sure – I’ve not heard of that kind of thing before, getting a sell-on from a player not at your club. It’s clever business.
“Getting the first refusal of the player is a very usual thing, but it’s down to whether the manager wants him in the squad. If they do turn it down, it’s seemingly a very clever piece of Daniel Levy business that we’ve not heard of before.”
Daniel Levy seals new Tottenham transfer agreement
Levy is the go-to guy when it comes to making a profit as the owner of a Premier League club, whether he is popular amongst the fans at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium or not.
The 62-year-old has recently struck a deal with the Haringey Borough Council to increase the number of non-football events at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium from 16 to 30 per year.
Now, Spurs have an incredible opportunity to earn money from a player who has never even stepped inside the stadium, and has only made 23 first-team appearances for Betis.
Whatever you think of Levy, he continues to come up with incredible deals to keep the financial gains ticking over in North London, though fans will be hoping to see more of that money invested on the pitch.
In other Tottenham news, Ange Postecoglou has been handed a new problem after what one player did v Newcastle United.
