Everton veteran Ashley Young has alleviated Sean Dyche’s crippling injury problems at Goodison Park with his displays in recent weeks.

Named in Troy Deeney’s BBC Team of the Week (22 October) after his performance in the Toffees’ 2-0 win over Ipswich Town on 19 October, Young has undergone quite the ride since the start of the season.

The 39-year-old’s display helped earn Sean Dyche’s side a second clean sheet in three games, and after being sent off in a dismal 3-0 loss on the opening day to Brighton, Young’s comeback has been outstanding.

Deeney said in his column: “Young was brilliant at right-back against Ipswich; not once did he get beaten one-on-one – he kept on running and running, playing the whole 95 minutes.”

Having penned a one-year extension to his contract at Goodison in the summer – seemingly at Dyche’s behest – few Blues fans would have expected Young to be their first-choice right-back this season.

However, with Nathan Patterson still out of action following season-ending surgery, and Seamus Coleman also making his way back from the sidelines, Young has been thrown in at the deep end.

That appeared to be a disastrous circumstance in August, with Young seeing red against Brighton in the first of four straight losses which saw Dyche’s side rooted to the foot of the table at the start of this term.

However, with the cash-strapped Toffees unable to bring in further reinforcements, the Premier League’s oldest outfield player (by a distance) has stood tall to help turn around the fortunes on Merseyside.

Dan Friedkin’s impending takeover, the new stadium move and his sheer age all look possible to make this season Young’s last with Everton, but while he’s still a part of the setup, expect the full-back to give his absolute all to keep Dyche’s side in the top-flight.

In other Everton news, Dan Friedkin has been heavily involved in a brand-new £148million stadium redevelopment project.
