Everton could now announce the departure of striker Neal Maupay before the end of Thursday 29 August as he is now undergoing a medical at Marseille, Foot Mercato reports.
According to the French outlet’s website on 29 August the former Brentford loanee’s exit to Ligue 1 is “looking good” after he arrived in Europe for testing.
He is set to leave Goodison on an initial loan with an obligation to buy him for €4million at the end [£3.36m], with The Athletic reporting on 29 August that the second amount will be in addition to an up-front fee of £5m.
Maupay was spotted with a Marseille fan holding the club’s scarf up for photographs earlier in the evening [Mode55489648, 29 August], and now Foot Mercato report his move should be made official the same night or early on the morning of deadline day.
Neal Maupay to seal Everton exit to Marseille
The sooner the deal is sealed the better if Everton are going to have any opportunity to use the financial boost to bring any late signings in.
Sean Dyche looks set to secure the senior central midfielder he has been targeting since the start of the summer to replace the inevitable exit of Amadou Onana, with Orel Mangala set to sign.
That had not come without extensive drama though as a Fiorentina offer turned his head, only for Lyon’s president to refuse to go back on his commitment to the Toffees [Gianluca Di Marzio, 29 August].
But with Dominic Calvert-Lewin also drawing late interest from some Premier League giants [Caught Offside, 27 August] the potential need to add a striker inside the deadline is only increased by Maupay’s exit.
On paper he is an obvious sacrifice after just one goal for the club since signing from Brighton two years ago, as he has never seemingly fit the system under Frank Lampard or Dyche and spent last season on loan at Brentford.
But if Calvert-Lewin is snapped up in the final hours and a replacement isn’t available it would leave the Toffees with just Beto and the injured Youssef Chermiti as recognised strikers, although new signing Iliman Ndiaye could fill in.
In other Everton news, a John Textor takeover claim has been blasted as “complete and utter nonsense” amid a £1.74billion development.
