Vaclav Cerny wowed Sky Sports reporter Mark Benstead with his “stunning” goal in Rangers versus Motherwell at Hampden Park on Saturday (10 August).

The Czechia put the Gers back in front shortly before half-time at their temporary home with an excellent curling effort in the 2-1 Scottish Premiership win.

It was a moment that certainly earned the acclaim of Benstead, who was reporting on the game for Sky Sports Soccer Saturday (10 August, 3:24pm).

He said: “Some players take time to settle into a new club, some players hit the ground from the off and that’s certainly been the case with Vaclav Cerny.

“He created the goal that got them level in midweek and he’s just put them ahead here today with his first for the club, the ball was played into him by James Tavernier on the right-hand corner of the Motherwell box, touch inside onto his left foot and curled a beauty beyond the dive of Oxbrough, a stunning strike.”

Rangers inject quality with Vaclav Cerny signing

It has been some week for Cerny, who was the creator for Cyriel Dessers to get Rangers a crucial late equaliser in the first leg of their Champions League third-round qualifying 1-1 draw with Dynamo Kiev in midweek.

And here today at Scotland’s national stadium, the 26-year-old winger – signed on a season-long lead deal from Wolfsburg – got off the mark with a brilliant moment of quality that will have delighted the Gers faithful in attendance at Hampden.

Cerny has had his issues with injury but if Rangers can keep him fit then boy it looks like they have a real talent on their hands and Philippe Clement with certainly hope he can contribute more goals and assists as the campaign goes on.

It’s early doors, of course, so there has to be a tempering of expectations to an extent but Cerny will be desperate to showcase his talents in Glasgow and the early signs are certainly extremely positive.

In other Rangers news, one journalist rued a “mental decision” from Clement.
