Jarrad Branthwaite has to think “career-wise” about his Everton future, according to Darren Bent.

Bent and Andy Goldstein touched on the situation with Branthwaite live on talkSPORT [2 October, 16:22] after reports from the Daily Mail [1 October] suggested city rivals Liverpool could hijack Manchester United’s next attempt to sign the centre-half.

Everton rebuffed several bids from United for the England man’s services over the summer, with former takeover candidate John Textor having claimed the club would have accepted a bid of £50.6million (€60m).

Goldstein asked Bent whether Branthwaite would want to move across Merseyside, to which the former England striker responded: “I don’t think he will, but he has to think career-wise.”

Liverpool interested in Everton star turn Jarrad Branthwaite

Of a limited number of players to represent both Everton and Liverpool down the years, there are certainly precious few who were established at both clubs – Nick Barmby and Don Hutchison are about the closest you would get.

Liverpool did pursue Anthony Gordon after Newcastle United’s PSR concerns were laid bare early in the summer transfer window, but this would be a direct transfer loaded with controversy.

Branthwaite is 22, is undoubtedly the most valuable asset at Goodison Park and has shown a ridiculous level of reliability in that his absence is massively felt when he is sidelined.

The Toffees’ robustness in fending off Man United throughout the summer was admirable – and Branthwaite’s recent injury issues, while severely stunting Sean Dyche’s side, at least made him a temporarily less attractive proposition to suitors.

There is no way Everton can sell to Liverpool, regardless of the financial situation which has enveloped the club, and the club will hope nothing is forced to materialise as they look to keep the cotton wool on their most glamorous asset for a while longer.
