The Arne Slot era at Liverpool is officially underway.
The Dutchman took charge of his first competitive game as the Reds boss on Saturday after replacing Jurgen Klopp in the summer, and he picked up a good win.
Liverpool were not at their absolute best by any means, but there were a number of positive signs to take from the game on their opening day.
One of them was Mohamed Salah’s performance – the Egyptian was ‘unbelievable‘ once again. But, his future, like Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold’s, is up in the air.
Jason Cundy on Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold’s Liverpool futures
Salah, Van Dijk and Alexander-Arnold are arguably Liverpool’s three biggest stars.
The trio played key roles in the successful years under Klopp, and they are still extremely important players for the Reds.
However, all three of them have entered the final year of their contracts at Anfield, and their futures are uncertain at this point.
Salah, Van Dijk and Alexander-Arnold all started in Liverpool’s win against Ipswich Town on the opening day of the new season.
Jason Cundy had his say on the trio on talkSPORT (August 17 2024, 6:29 pm) after the game, and he believes one of them is definitely leaving when his contract expires in 2025 – Salah.
He said: “I think Salah will go.
“I think Trent will sign. Van Dijk is a tough one actually. How much appetite is there for both parties to get that done? You would have thought that both would want to get it done.
“I just get the feeling maybe Salah is coming towards the end. I don’t know that, but I just get the feeling.”
What should Liverpool do with Salah, Van Dijk and Alexander-Arnold?
Liverpool have found themselves in a difficult position with respect to Salah, Van Dijk and Alexander-Arnold’s contracts, and they only have themselves to blame.
None of those three players should’ve been allowed to enter the final year of their deals.
Now, Liverpool may have to make a few really tough decisions, but the easiest one is to do everything they can to keep hold of Alexander-Arnold.
As for Van Dijk, the Reds would ideally like to keep hold of him too, but he is 33 already and if they can’t get him to commit his future for the right price, they could be forced to let him go.
That applies in Salah’s case as well as he will almost certainly receive a mammoth offer from Saudi Arabia right after he enters the final six months of his contract in January.
Liverpool should try and keep all three players, but the priority has to be Alexander-Arnold. If keeping him results in the other two leaving, so be it.
