Rangers will definitely be affected by being forced to play away from Ibrox at Hampden Park against Motherwell, according to Ryan Jack.
The recently-departed Gers midfielder told The Warm-Up on 9 August that the disruption caused by having to travel to the national stadium and not have the usual atmosphere will be an issue, but the team “can’t afford distractions” as they look for a first win.
Building work delays in Govan have decamped the Light Blues to Hampden for weeks and Jack believes the effect will be even greater against Dynamo Kyiv in midweek.
He said (8m 10s): “Yeah, definitely. It’s going to have an effect, there’s no doubt. The power that Ibrox has, especially next week, next Tuesday, that’s a big Champions League qualifier. The atmosphere that Ibrox can bring for that.
“Obviously when you’re going to a home game you have to travel to Hampden for the game. It’s going to feel different, of course it is, as a player.
“But Rangers are at a stage where they can’t afford distractions. They need to just focus on the job that’s in hand and I think this weekend’s vital to go and get three points.”
Ibrox debacle set to hit Philippe Clement’s Rangers side
Thankfully for Philippe Clement they face a weakened Motherwell side in the first home game away from Ibrox with Stuart Kettlewell’s side in the midst of an injury crisis.
On paper the Light Blues should have enough to record a first win of the season despite their own side being undercooked thanks to a half-finished transfer window.
Clement has finally seen fit to start new signings Robin Propper and Vaclav Cerny for this game but has surprisingly named Scott Wright in the XI again.
The Belgian will need to quickly get a result at Hampden to prevent doubts building up around the stadium switch and there is a major opportunity against Motherwell.
But fail to do so and he risks falling even further behind Celtic already and questions over his position may increase.
The club aren’t expected to sack him even if the campaign gets off to a bad start [Herald, 27 July] but his new contract has widely been tipped to offer him little protection if he is facing pressure headed into the first Old Firm derby next month [Keith Jackson, 4 August].
In other Rangers news, a European club have contacted the Gers over selling a regular starter.
