Rangers not having “a lot of money” could be a key factor behind why Philippe Clement is still in a job, Ally McCoist has said.

Speaking on talkSPORT (27 November, 8:09 am), McCoist reacted after Alan Brazil asked what the mood is at Ibrox regarding the Gers’ recent form, following the 1-1 draw with Dundee United.

Clement has come under increasing pressure in the wake of that result – which leaves them 11 points behind Celtic at the top – and incorrect reports even surfaced that he had been sacked in the aftermath.

Brazil said: “By the way, at Ibrox, what’s the fans’ reaction at Rangers?”

McCoist replied: “Oh, poor mate – they’re not enjoying what they’re watching, clearly, that goes without saying.

“So is he on thin ice, the manager?”, Brazil asked.

McCoist answered: “I don’t think so. I’m not sure – they don’t have a lot of money.”

Philippe Clement being saved by off-field issues at Rangers

Were the Gers in a financial position similar to that of Celtic’s at the moment, there’s almost no doubt that any manager who fell 11 points behind their arch-rivals would immediately be shown the door.

However, a hapless Ibrox board have backed themselves into a corner regarding the manager’s future, awarding Clement a bumper contract extension this season in a show of confidence.

While that would usually be a sign that all is well off-field, that couldn’t be further from the truth at Ibrox, with Patrick Stewart’s recent arrival finally bringing a seven-month spell without a CEO to an end.

Clement being tied up for the next four years also means the club would have to pay him significant compensation if they were to sack him, potentially limiting their transfer budget in the coming months.

For now, Clement remains in post despite his side’s lacklustre form, and given the extent to which the Gers are strapped for cash at the moment, a decision on his future could still be a long way off.

In other Rangers news, Clement’s job could be on the line if he doesn’t make two key team selection decisions against Nice.
