'Ticks all the boxes' - Pundit view: Clement to improve Rangers-linked Scotland int'l striker

Tommy Conway is a good player who Philippe Clement would be able to improve even further at Rangers, says Derek Ferguson.

The Bristol City striker has entered the final year of his contract at Ashton Gate and both the Light Blues and Celtic are interested in signing him to a January pre-contract that would require as little as £300,000 in cross-border compensation according to the Daily Record on 11 June.

Bristol Live reported the same day that the Light Blue would now be on “red alert” as his club were ready to sell the Scotland international striker this summer after he went to the Euros in Steve Clarke’s squad.

And former Ibrox midfielder believes the 21-year-old has got plenty to work with after a 12-goal season in all competitions and has backed Clement to make the most of it if a deal can be done.

He exclusively told Ibrox News: “Aye he’s a good player isn’t he the boy? He’s 21, I don’t know exactly what the fee would be, but he ticks all the boxes in terms of what Rangers [are looking for], how their recruitment is going.

“Bring them in, younger guys, make them better, then can we sell them on?

“Listen, he’s a talented boy in the Scotland Under-21s and you don’t make the Euros if you’re not a good player so what you can see is there’s a lot to work with there and a lot to improve.

“I think under our current manager he would do that.”

Philippe Clement is in pursuit of a new Rangers striker and could benefit Tommy Conway.

Cyriel Dessers and Sam Lammers in line for Rangers exits

Conway is unlikely to be the 30-plus goal-a-season man that Clement surely needs this term but as a capable back-up he could be very useful.

However it looks like the Light Blues need to find a way to shift players such as the unwanted Sam Lammers and the sought-after Cyriel Dessers to bring new goal-scorers in.

The Scot would surely be an upgrade on the former but it may well be Conway’s Tartan Army teammate Lawrence Shankland who would make more sense to replace the 22-goal Nigerian from Hearts, with other Gers-linked striker targets are either proving out of reach or are making moves elsewhere.

In other Rangers news, senior Ibrox exits are now “inevitable” as four key men could go.
