Mark Guidi has advised Rangers to hold talks with Wolfsburg to knock down the asking price for Vaclav Cerny.
The Go Radio pundit is of the view that the 27-year-old brings the Gers attack to life and urged the Ibrox outfit to make his season-long loan deal permanent.
Although Barry Ferguson said that Wolfsburg want around £5-6million for the Czechia international, Guidi believes new Light Blues supremos Fraser Thornton and Patrick Stewart can bring that price down with negotiations like Celtic did with Paulo Bernardo’s signing from Benfica.
“He’s been a really good addition to Rangers, scored a lot of important goals, assists as well”, he said on The Go Radio Football Show on Monday, 23 December.
“Cerny certainly brings Rangers to life in that final third and I’m sure that if they could make that deal permanent, then they can.
“It’s really up to the new Rangers executive team to go and negotiate with Wolfsburg.
“That might be in terms of the loan deal from the summer, Barry [Ferguson] is saying £5million or £6m to go and trigger something permanent, but go and try and chip away at that.
“Go and see if you can come up [with something] like Celtic did with Paulo Bernardo.
“Try to get £2m off the fee that was agreed, make a chance for Wolfsburg to make that up further down the line in whatever way.
“But, I think £6m would probably be too rich for Rangers, I’d imagine at this stage, but if they can chip away at it, I’m sure that’s something they’d like to make permanent.”
Philippe Clement would be happy to have Vaclav Cerny permanently at Rangers
Cerny has been in fine form for Rangers since arriving on loan from Wolfsburg in the summer, bagging 10 goals and six assists from 26 games across all competitions.
The Glasgow giants could not agree a buy option when they shook hands with the German club over the loan deal, but would be keen to discuss a permanent transfer now.
Although Philippe Clement recently admitted that the Ibrox outfit cannot afford Cerny as things stand, there is no doubt that he would be happy to have him at the club permanently.
As Guidi said, it is up to Thornton and Stewart, as well as Nils Koppen, to come up with ways to convince Wolfsburg to ease their stands.
It is worth noting that Cerny is unlikely to offer resale value as he turns 28 next year.
Rangers have had a tough time selling players for profit recently, meaning they have to be careful when trying to negotiate a permanent deal for Cerny.
