Tottenham could beat West Ham to Tammy Abraham deal - expert

West Ham want to sign Tammy Abraham in the summer transfer window but are facing competition from Tottenham.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Hammers striker Frank McAvennie insisted Julen Lopetegui is leading the push to sign the striker after impressive performances in Italy.

Abraham moved to Roma from Chelsea for £34million in 2021 and has scored 37 goals in 119 appearances for the Italian club.

Premier League sides now want to offer him a route back to England, where he found the net 30 times in 82 appearances for Chelsea after coming through their academy.

A cruciate ligament injury meant Abraham featured just 12 times last season, returning to Serie A duty in April, but West Ham are among clubs willing to take a punt on his recovery.

McAvennie praised Abraham’s work rate and ability to adapt after the move to Roma, claiming he would fit in perfectly at the London Stadium under Lopetegui.

He went on to insist the Hammers would be “delighted” if they can beat their London rivals to the signing and bolster their squad.

“I would like him [at West Ham],” he told Football Insider.

“But Tottenham are trying to buy him, there are a few Premier League clubs looking at him.

“It’s going to be an exciting one because under David Moyes I would have said no, but the new manager knows what he wants in the transfer market.

“Tammy can work hard, he works his socks off, and you don’t score goals for fun in Italy if you’re not a good player.

“They have serious defenders over there, so fair play to him.

“If West Ham can get him, they’ll be delighted.”
