Celtic idol 'really annoyed' by Mikey Johnston after West Brom twist

West Brom will not meet the £6million asking price set by Celtic to sign Mikey Johnston on a permanent transfer this summer.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Hoops striker Frank McAvennie was left stunned at the price tag and insisted no club would be willing to match their valuation.

McAvennie raised concerns that his failure to nail down a starting place at Parkhead amid inconsistent performances would be an issue for buying clubs.

Johnston made his Celtic debut in 2017 but has since featured just 92 times for the club in seven years, leading to questions about his ability.

However, after moving on loan to West Brom in the second half of last season, he scored seven goals and picked up two assists in 20 games and established himself as a key player under Carlos Corberan.

The Baggies are now keen on making his loan deal permanent this summer and have begun exploring their options for the deal, as revealed by Football Insider.

Another loan deal remains an option for Johnston, but McAvennie claimed he would need to up his game to prove he is worthy of a £6million price tag.

“How much? They’re not going to get that,” he told Football Insider, stunned by the asking price.

“It’s not about what he’s worth, he’s been at Celtic for seven or eight years and never managed to tie down a first-team place.

“That’s what I’d look at if I was the buying club.

“West Brom have seen what they’re getting and they’ve seen what he can do, but I don’t think they’ve got that kind of money to spend.

“I don’t know what their makeup is looking like now, but that is a lot of money.

“It’s a lot of money for Mikey Johnston. He’s got talent and he did well down there, scored some great goals, but he wasn’t that great.

“What you don’t see is the games where he drifts in and out. He’s got to get that out of his game, it’s so frustrating and it annoys me.

“When you’ve spent seven years at a club and never tied down a starting spot, something isn’t right.”
