Getafe president Angel Torres has poured cold water on reports linking Omar Alderete with a move to Tottenham.
TBR Football reported on 13 December that Spurs had been alerted to the defender’s availability amid a £13million release clause with Ange Postecoglou reportedly eager to recruit a centre-back in January.
While a move for Leeds United captain Pascal Struijk has also been mooted [TBR Football], Alderete appears to be the priority target in North London, but Torres assured the Getafe faithful that the centre-back is happy with the La Liga outfit when speaking to Marca [17 December] and expects him to see out the remainder of the campaign in Spain.
He said: “The fans can rest assured that Alderete will be here until June. He is happy. We are not going to touch the goal, defence and midfield unless someone pays the release clause.”
Tottenham will have to activate Getafe release clause for Omar Alderete
Postecoglou desperately needs defensive reinforcements in the January transfer window, with regular starters Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero sidelined for the foreseeable future.
The Australian will rue his decision to rush the pair back into the starting lineup for the 4-3 loss against Chelsea – both were removed after aggravating their existing injuries at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
However, van de Ven and Romero will undoubtedly resume their role as the preferred pairing in central defence when fit, and Postecoglou must bear this in mind when pursuing a short-term fix to his injury woes.
Therefore, a move for Alderete ticks all the boxes – the 28-year-old has been a first-team regular in Spain at Valencia and Getafe for four years and has a modest release clause.
But whether he is willing to see his role reduced to perhaps the fourth-choice centre-back in North London with Radu Dragusin also to contend with remains to be seen.
The Romanian is a transfer target for Serie A side Fiorentina [Tutto Mercato], but Spurs will not sanction a departure at the midway point of the campaign with so few first team options at Postecoglou’s disposal.
Alderete could be the perfect fix to the centre-back issues at Tottenham if he agrees to the move, and Daniel Levy should have no problems getting the deal over the line.
