Tottenham teen George Abbott set to join Notts County on loan

George Abbott will make a season-long loan move to Notts County from the Tottenham Hotspur academy, according to Alasdair Gold.

The Football London journalist posted on X (29 August) to report that the versatile 19-year-old Spurs midfielder is set to join the League Two side for the entirety of the 2024/25 campaign.

Abbott made his Spurs debut on the last day of the 2022/23 season but is yet to feature again for the Lilywhites’ first team, with Gold stating that the temporary switch is a “good move” for the teenager.

Abbott has seemingly been nowhere near the first-team picture since Ange Postecoglou’s arrival at the club, making his one and only appearance in the last competitive match before his appointment.

Therefore, the 19-year-old, who is a defensive midfielder by trade but still comfortable pushing further forward, could well find his feet in League Two and play a regular role in Notts County’s promotion push.

County finished mid-table in their first campaign back in the EFL following several seasons in non-league, and adding a Premier League academy player is the kind of signing they’d have hoped to make.

The East Midlanders were heavily involved in the race for the top seven for much of last season before falling away towards the back end, and thus the energy and dynamism Abbott will bring could be crucial.

It’s a world away from playing in the Premier League regularly, as new faces like Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall are expected to do, but Abbott could return to North London in 2025 ready to stake his own first-team claim.
