Ally McCoist was blown away by how Cyriel Dessers took his goal for Rangers against Olympiacos on Thursday.
The Light Blues played out a 1-1 draw with the Greek giants in Athens on 7 November, with Dessers nullifying Ayoub El Kaabi’s 56th-minute opener eight minutes later.
Played in behind, Dessers got the better of Panagiotis Retsos easily before calmly finding the bottom-left corner of the goal, leaving McCoist stunned.
“That’s a tremendous finish, I need to say. Absolutely poor defending from Retsos diving in like that, that’s shocking”, McCoist said live on TNT Sports (7 November, 7:08pm).
“That said, the composure after it from Dessers was excellent, just side-steps the defender, gives the goalkeeper the eyes and goes back across into the far corner. That is a lovely finish.”
Cyriel Dessers stuns Ally McCoist in Olympiacos v Rangers
It is safe to say McCoist was not the only one wowed by how Dessers pulled off his goal against Olympiacos.
There was a case to be made about the Nigeria international being hauled off at half-time, with the striker missing two big chances.
It seemed Philippe Clement’s decision to continue playing the 29-year-old up front instead of taking him out of the firing line was only harming his confidence.
It is worth noting that the forward has come in for severe criticism for his performances in a Rangers shirt this season.
However, Dessers responded to critics with a sublime goal against Olympiacos, earning his side a point on a night which could have ended in another defeat for them.
The goal brought an end to the former Genk frontman’s four-game wait to score in the Europa League, while it also saw him get on the scoresheet for the second game in a row.
