'Tremendous, Vital' - Sky Sports pundit wowed by what Rangers ace did in unusual spot v Dundee Utd

Cyriel Dessers wowed James McFadden for his “tremendous” defensive work for Rangers at Dundee United.

The Sky Sports pundit reacted live on the broadcaster’s match coverage from Tannadice as the Nigerian striker produced an excellent defensive header after 28 minutes to clear the danger at his own back post.

Kevin Holt had headed a deep free-kick into the danger area but Dessers rose highest to protect the 1-0 lead from Tom Lawrence’s early goal, which proved to be the winner.

McFadden said (12.28pm): “It’s a tremendous header, it really had to be made, from Cyriel Dessers. It’s something that Dundee United, if you look at their team, big, aggressive players to go and attack it, it was an opportunity for them.

“I have to say it was tremendous defending from Cyriel Dessers… it’d be easy for Dessers, being a forward, to switch off but he doesn’t. It’s a vital intervention.”

Dessers played an important part in the crucial victory at both ends of the pitch, with his lay off setting Lawrence on his way to the seventh-minute opener.

And his interventions in defence helped preserve a slim margin of victory in a strong overall performance, even if it was overshadowed by the excellent late cameo from his replacement Hamza Igamane.

Dessers has limitations as a goal-scorer and still managed to frustrate in this victory as he delayed a shot in good position just before half time, and went to ground too easily on occasion.

But his commitment to the cause under Philippe Clement when all other options have often been unavailable has never been in doubt, and his work at the back was more evidence of that.

And yet if Igamane’s introduction from the bench was anything to go by the Moroccan could take the senior forward’s place before too long, as he looked commanding beyond on his years on the ball and almost single-handedly created a second for Lawrence.

It was only the second time the 21-year-old has even been in the match-day squad after his summer signing, but with Danilo suffering an injury set back [Chris Jack, 5 September] Igamane’s belated introduction could be crucial.

There have been fears coming out of the transfer window Rangers would be solely reliant on Dessers but the youngster is now suggesting otherwise.
