Kris Boyd could not believe Vaclav Cerny failed to score for Rangers in the first half of the 2-0 win against Malmo.

The 26-year-old was presented with a golden opportunity in the final stages of the first half and blasted his shot wide of the goal after rounding the goalkeeper, with Cyriel Dessers waiting for the cutback.

Boyd was astonished the forward failed to give his side a two-goal lead in Sweden and blasted Cerny live on Sky Sports [26 September, 6:32pm] for the missed opportunity.

He said: “This is unbelievable. Rangers find themselves through. The ball is through to Cerny one-on-one and the goalkeeper is down.

“Cerny needs to go around him but decides to hit it – he should have done a lot better.”

Vaclav Cerny misses golden opportunity for Rangers

It is safe to say Rangers surprised everyone when the side went into the half-time interval with a 1-0 lead against Malmo.

The Gers dominated the opening 45 minutes and should have taken a more commanding lead into the break after a flurry of missed chances.

Malmo on the other hand had nothing to show for their first-half efforts and could count themselves lucky that Philippe Clement’s side failed to capitalise on their dominance however short-lived.

Cerny and goalscorer Nedim Bajrami were culpable for spurning opportunities to double the lead, while Mohamed Diomande left a lot to be desired with his first-half performance to set up a nervous second half with the hosts still in the contest until Ross McCausland killed things off.

The Gers need to embark on a great run in the Europa League this season to account for the disappointment of their Champions League exit to Dynamo Kyiv and lift the fans after an abysmal start to their Scottish Premiership campaign. This was a great way to go about doing exactly that.

In other Rangers news, the Gers have been slammed for scandalous behaviour as ‘terrible’ news emerges.
