Everton have done some “unbelievable” business in the deal to take Neal Maupay to Marseille, Liverpool Echo journalist Matt Jones has said.

Providing an update on the Echo’s live blog for transfer deadline day (30 August) Jones said the newspaper understands that the Toffees are to receive an initial £6million and could end up with £10m if certain conditions are met.

The club themselves confirmed (official website) that the striker, who scored only one goal in 32 appearances for the club and spent last season on loan at Brentford, that Maupay departs for the Ligue 1 side initially on loan with an obligation to buy.

Jones wrote on X (30 August): “Everton could get close to their money back on Maupay – who has one year left on his contract and scored one goal for the club. Quite frankly, an unbelievable bit of business.”

Great work from Everton on Neal Maupay deal

There will be absolutely no tears shed from Everton supporters over Maupay’s exit, with the Frenchman having talked a big game off the pitch but done absolutely nothing to back it up on it.

He was shunted out on loan to Brentford last season and, thankfully, even though they did not take up a purchase option, Marseille have decided to take the 28-year-old back to France.

It was reported by BBC Sport in August 2022 that the Toffees had paid £15m to sign Maupay from Brentford, so to get anywhere near that amount is an excellent piece of business.

Whether there are more outgoings before this evening’s 11pm deadline remains to be seen, but hopefully Orel Mangala and Ernest Nuamah should arrive on loan from Lyon to bolster Sean Dyche’s ranks before the window slams shut.

After a couple of defeats to start the Premier League season, Dyche certainly could do with having a couple of extra options in his threadbare squad.

In other Everton news, another player is set to leave the club on loan today.
