Phil McNulty believes there are increasing nerves at Everton despite admitting Dan Friedkin’s ideal scenario would be for Sean Dyche to see out the season at Goodison Park.
A 4-0 drubbing at the hands of Manchester United on Sunday (1 December) left the Toffees a mere two points above the Premier League relegation zone.
With the Friedkin Group’s takeover imminent and a move to Bramley-Moore Dock on the horizon, McNulty – the BBC’s chief football writer – described it as “unthinkable” the club starts next season in the second tier.
Writing for the BBC Sport website (2 December), McNulty opined: “The ideal scenario for Friedkin would arguably have been for Dyche to see Everton safe this season then depart for the new owner’s chosen replacement when his contract expires in the summer
“Recent events, however, have increased the sense of nervousness around Goodison Park as the idea of entering the magnificent new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock in the Championship at the start of next season is unthinkable.”
Sean Dyche needs to get Everton performing in the Premier League again
While there have been times this season when Everton have proven their worth and have shown that they can compete with some of the bigger teams in the top flight, more often than not, their performances have left a lot to be desired.
Despite the unbeaten run they went on a month or so ago, their performances across the campaign have been well below par and, without a significant upturn in form soon, it’s hard to see how they’re going to drag themselves out of a relegation battle.
Fans expected their team to finally be able to avoid a dogfight at the bottom of the table thanks to their solid summer window that saw Dyche bring in some new faces to bolster key areas of his squad.
Unless things turn around soon, it feels like Friedkin may have a far bigger job on his hands than he first thought.
Which, in reality, isn’t exactly ideal, especially when fans expect him to swoop in and make some of their problems go away instantly.
