Everton player Asmir Begovic has hit out at commentators for their “lazy” criticism of goalkeepers.
The 37-year-old returned to Goodison Park after leaving on a free transfer to QPR last summer, joining back after 46 games in the Championship, though he has yet to feature for the Toffees.
As a shot-stopper who has experience with the likes of Chelsea, Bournemouth and AC Milan, Begovic certainly makes a good point when it comes to the analysis of keepers.
Speaking on Sky Sports’ TikTok, shared by Daniel Hussey via X [2 October], Begovic said: “One of the myths we have to try and kill is really the near-post myth. It’s a very lazy commentary.
“If you look at the pace of a ball, whether it’s five or ten yards in front of you and the pace beats you, it doesn’t matter if it’s near post or far post, it’s going to beat you.”

Begovic’s teammate, Jordan Pickford, will certainly be no stranger when it comes to receiving criticism from fans, the media, and pundits alike, especially during his years at Goodison Park.
The 2023/24 campaign seemed to be the first real season the England international received his deserved plaudits after the Toffees only conceded more goals than Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool in the league.
Goalkeepers always seem like an easy target, and most shot-stoppers know that when beginning to learn the trade, but the best stars learn how to ignore the criticism and work to improve upon their errors.
Begovic is also likely to have experienced his fair share of criticism, throughout his multiple decades in the sport, but football needs someone of his stature to stand up and defend the goalkeepers of today.
It is an interesting point made, one that seems to gain a lot of attention when a ‘keeper is beaten at his near post, and Begovic could certainly raise even more points as he nears the end of his playing career.
