Pape Sarr has to step up for Tottenham against Coventry City after Ange Postecoglou confirmed that Yves Bissouma will miss out through injury.
Bissouma missed the North London derby defeat to Arsenal at the weekend after picking up an injury on international duty with Mali.
There was a hope that the former Brighton man could return in the EFL Cup clash against Championship outfit Coventry City on Wednesday (18 September).
Spurs boss Postecoglou has now confirmed in his press conference, shared by Sky Sports News via X (17 September), that Bissouma is not in contention to feature.
The Australian will now likely put his faith in Sarr, who must step up and fill the void of his teammate against Coventry.
Pape Sarr must fill Yves Bissouma Tottenham role v Coventry City
So far this season, Postecoglou has afforded two starts and two cameo appearances off the bench to the Senegal international.
Now the 22-year-old could be in line for his third start of the campaign, to replace what Bissouma offers, after coming on against Arsenal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
In the North London derby, Sarr accumulated 33 touches and 21 passes throughout his substitute appearances, with an 84 per cent accuracy [FotMob].
By comparison, against Newcastle United, the Mali star maintained a 92 per cent pass accuracy despite playing 60 minutes more than teammate Sarr did against the Gunners [FotMob].
The ex-Metz starlet was poor with the ball at his feet in the derby, with the midfielder having a zero per cent dribble success rate over his two attempts.
Bissouma is typically positive when dribbling, which was true against the Magpies as he completed four dribbles throughout his 82 minute showing.
What Sarr can offer is defensive output, which may prove to unlock the likes of James Maddison further up the pitch.
With a 100 per cent tackle win rate against Mikel Arteta’s side, the Senegalese youngster should only do better against Coventry.
The 22-year-old can be hopeful of a start and must impress Postecoglou while Bissouma is out through injury.
